CHAPTER 5

Seven of the eight competitors wait in a park outside of M-Verse Mansion, a lavish, folly-style castle sitting on nearly two hundred acres of land owned by the Bass Foundation.

Previous competitors in the tournament call this "the size up." In the moments leading up to the start of the show, the competitors begin to map out strategies and machinations for victory. Signs of weakness. Points of attack. The lies. The deceit. The intimidation. It all begins here.

Stacy Bowman sits on a bench in deep contemplation, her long black and blue hair shifting in the crisp breeze of the night, putting goosebumps on her dark brown skin.

A few feet away from the bench, Jason Oliver makes small talk with Israel Jahoa. Both of them are well-built. But Jason, with his military crew cut and brown freckles above his wide smile, is much stockier than Israel, a lean, stone-faced Samoan with a neatly trimmed afro.

Their heads turn as Marcia Miguelas walks by them, a young, caramel-skinned Hispanic girl with flowing locks of curly brown hair.

She approaches Dale Hunt, who sits on the farthest bench from Stacy. Her beauty catches his eye. She winks at him. He smiles for a moment. Then he thinks of Tasha and turns his head away.
